The Consortium for Functional Glycomics (CFG) is a large initiative funded by the NIGMS and headed by Principal Investigator Dr. James Paulson of The Scripps Research Institute. The first grant, awarded in 2001, was a five-year, $34 million grant. The grant was renewed in 2006 for a second five years, with the CFG receiving $40.7 million. The goal of the CFG is to continue its collaborative study of the complex dynamics of protein-carbohydrate interactions and the elucidation of their roles in cell communication at the cell surface. This multidisciplinary group of some 300 participating scientists from over 170 institutions in the United States, Europe and Japan is studying the paradigms by which carbohydrate-binding proteins mediate cell communication by interacting with their cognate glycoprotein or glycolipid ligands.
